What We Leave Out… and Why?
What We Leave Out of Elin Eyes Products
One of the key considerations when we were formulating the Elin Eyes Range was the growing evidence of the ingredients commonly found in skincare and makeup that may contribute to the development of dry eyes. Dry Eye Disease is more common in women, and as well as causing discomfort, it also means the eyes can look red, vision can be blurry, and it can impact your mood.
Because of this, at Elin Eyes, we don’t just focus on what we put into our formulations; we’re equally deliberate about what we leave out. Why? Because we know that many common ingredients in eyecare and beauty products can negatively impact the delicate health of your eyes, lids, and lashes over time.
Prioritizing Eye Health
Your eyes are a sensitive and vital part of your overall health and appearance. A significant body of research, including the recent TFOS Impact of Cosmetics on the Ocular Surface, has shown ingredients used in many cosmetics and skincare products have been linked to issues such as Dry Eye Disease and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), conditions that affect comfort and tear quality. By avoiding these harmful substances, Elin Eyes aims to protect and enhance your eyes, delivering both beauty and health benefits.
The Ingredients We Leave Out
Here’s a closer look at the ingredients we consciously exclude from all Elin Eyes products and why:
Sulphate - Found in many cleansers and shampoos, sulphates can strip natural oils from your skin and lashes, leading to dryness and irritation.
Parabens - Common preservatives, parabens, are known to disrupt hormone function and may contribute to ocular surface inflammation.
Formaldehyde - This toxic preservative can cause irritation and allergic reactions, particularly in sensitive areas like the eyes.
Phthalates - Often used to enhance the flexibility of plastics, phthalates can interfere with hormonal systems and have been linked to irritation of the skin and eyes.
Phenoxyethanol - another preservative frequently used in cosmetics phenoxyethanol can lead to eye irritation and dryness, especially with repeated exposure.
Mineral Oil - While it may seem hydrating, mineral oil creates a barrier that can clog pores and glands, impacting the natural function of the Meibomian glands.
Fragrance - Synthetic fragrances can be a significant source of irritation for the eyes, triggering allergies or exacerbating dryness.
Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK) - A preservative found in many eye drops and cosmetics, BAK is known to cause toxicity to the ocular surface and worsen Dry Eye Disease.
Argireline - A peptide marketed for reducing wrinkles, Argireline has potential risks for ocular health, particularly when it comes into contact with the tear film.
Isopropyl Cloprostenate - Common in lash growth serums, this ingredient can cause inflammation and pigmentation changes.
